How do I lead, and how do I need to lead?

I think I would identify myself as a transformational leader.  I tend to focus on big ideas and think more about long term success in our curriculum than the day to day running of the school.  While these leadership type is important, right now my school needs more.  We have undergone mass amounts of change and our students and teachers would benefit from an influx of stable, transactional, leadership.  Big ideas and goals are important but teachers need an environment where that type of education is possible.

Power Dynamics at VMS

I think that the most relevant aspect of power dynamic at my school site it the constant change the school has been going through.  The school has been faced with possible closure and has gone through 4 principals in 8 years.  This much change has made it very difficult for anyone to really understand procedures, roles, and who to go to with particular problems.  It has created an environment with little to no clear understanding of who is "in charge".  I think that the power dynamic will be unclear until we have a consistent staff for an extended period of time.

Strength based leadership can support a community of practice.

Self-reflection, we talk about it, we say we're doing it, but do we know how?  It is important for each of us to truly understand our abilities and talents.  If, as individuals, we understand out strengths we will be able to work with leaders and administrators to create strong, effective, teams.  We can't expect our leaders to understand us if we don't understand ourselves.  By leading through example, I am going to improve the community practice in my school by focusing on my skills and strengths and work with my coworkers to assist them in understanding their strengths.

What do I want from EDL/500?

EDL/500 Personal Leadership, the beginning of improving my ability to lead.  I think it's the perfect course to begin the Teacher Leadership program.  I hope that this course will challenge me to reflect on my personal leadership styles, preferences, and areas of growth.  I feel that starting with a focused topic will prepare me for my future courses, like a a pebble and a pond, and the wave it creates.
